Orthodontic Emergencies: Staying Prepared

Orthodontic emergency braces fix

Real emergencies with your braces are uncommon; however, when they happen Dr. Geoff Smith at HGS Ortho in Port Coquitlam and Richmond wants to ensure you’re prepared. Be sure to contact us if you are having excruciating pain or if you have any questions about your braces.

If you’re experiencing discomfort or any problems with your braces, here’s what you can do after booking your appointment at HGS Orthodontics.

If any of your wires or appliances are poking you, use a soft eraser to push it down or cover it with wax.

If your bracket or bands loosen, try to keep it in place with wax.

If a wire loosens, try to put it back in place. A pair tweezers should do the job. Wax may help alleviate the discomfort and if you absolutely must, you can cut the wire with nail clippers.

Contact HGS Ortho in Richmond and Port Coquitlam if your headgear bothers you – this isn’t something you can fix yourself.

Pain/discomfort is common for the first few days. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water or take over-the-counter pain medicine.
