The Importance of Retainers

For those who have had the experience of wearing braces, they can attest that wearing braces could be both a discomfort and a joy. They know that the end results of wearing braces is far too irresistible to pass up. This is why many anticipate the day that they have their braces removed. To them,  is a day of freedom from the braces that have restricted them for so long. It is also saying farewell to the discomfort that comes with wearing braces, but hold that thought. Before celebrating your day of freedom, remember that you may have to wear retainers after you have gotten your braces removed. While you are tempted to not wear your retainers altogether, it is important to remember that they will play a crucial role in having your teeth straightened.

First of all, what are retainers?  Retainers are a sort of removable orthodontic appliance that your orthodontist may have you wear right after you have your braces removed. Why? Teeth have a tendency to revert back to their original positions, once the braces are removed and the wearing of retainers will prevent this from happening.

Your retainers are usually made out of wire and hard plastic. For the first several months, your orthodontist would recommend that you wear your retainers all the time. It might take a bit of getting used to, at first. This is completely normal and it is crucial that you don’t let yourself be tempted to not wear your retainers. If you don’t want to go through the whole process of wearing braces again, it is important that you follow your orthodontist’s instructions, and wear your retainers the recommended amount of time.

Remember, your retainers will bring you one step closer to your ultimate goal — straighter and healthier teeth. Contact HGS Ortho if you have any questions about retainers or your orthodontic treatment in general.
